It was recommended by many our teachers in the night of the middle of Sha’ban to do the following practice (preferably between Maghrib and Isha’):
- Pray 2 raka’at, as sunna/nafl prayers
- Read Surah Yasin with the intention of a long life in obedience and orientation to Allah
- Recite a du’a of Sha’ban
- Then pray 2 more raka’at, as sunna/nafl prayers
- Read Surah Yasin again, with the intention of averting trials, tribulations and catastrophes
- Recite a du’a of Sha’ban
- Pray 2 raka’at, as sunna/nafl prayers
- Read Surah Yasin with the intention of relying only on Allah and not any of His creation
- Recite a du’a of Sha’ban
Al-marhum Shaykh Seraj Hasan Hendricks translated Imam Abdullah b. Alawi al-Haddad’s du’a for Sha’ban – see below.
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Compassionate.
O Possessor of Benevolence – and none is more Gracious than He; O Possessor of Majesty and Honour; O Possessor of Might and Kindness. There is no god but Allah – a support for those who seek refuge, a sanctuary for those who seek protection, and a shelter for those in fear.
If it is that You have decreed for me misfortune, or deprivation, or deficiency in my wealth, then erase for me what You have decreed of misfortune and deprivation and littleness of means; and re-establish me in You as one blessed with happiness, success, and all that is good and prosperous. For indeed, You have spoken, and Your Word is the Truth, as revealed in Your Revelation to Your appointed Prophet: “Allah erases or establishes what He pleases; with Him is the Mother of the Book.” (al-Ra’d. 13:28).
My Lord, through the Great Manifestation on the night of the revered Middle of Sha’ban in which all affairs of moment are decreed and confirmed, release me from all trials and afflictions – those of which I am aware, and those of which I am not. Forgive for all things of which only You know best.
O Allah, establish me from amongst Your servants as one of the beneficiaries of the greatest portions and share that You have allotted on this night – of light through which You guide, or of mercy which You distribute, or wealth which You apportion, or all forms of grace which You divide amongst Your believing servants.
O Allah, O Allah, O Allah, there is no god but You.
O Allah, grant me a heart that is pious and pure and free from idolatry; and not one filled with denial and misery. (Grant me too) a heart that is sound, humble and submissive.
O Allah, fill my heart with Your Light and the lights of Your Vision, and Your Beauty, and Your Perfection, and Your Love, and Your Protection, and Your Power, and Your Knowledge, O most Merciful of the Merciful. May the blessings and peace of Allah, the Most High, be upon our master Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
