One of our students recently asked: What intention should we make as we enter the month of Ramadan?
The righteous and learned across the centuries have offered profound guidance on forming intentions for this blessed month — intentions that unite outward worship, inward purification, service to creation, and nearness to God.
Presented below is a comprehensive supplication of Ramadan intentions, inspired by contemporary formulations such as that of Ḥabīb Abū Bakr al-ʿAdanī b. ʿAlī al-Mashhūr, and enriched by the transmitted invocations and devotional writings of the great exemplars of spiritual refinement — including Imām ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī, Imām Abū al-Ḥasan al-Shādhilī, Imām Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī, and Imām ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlawī al-Ḥaddād.
It is presented as a single continuous supplication for recitation and reflection throughout the month.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ، حَمْدًا يُوَافِي نِعَمَهُ وَيُكَافِئُ مَزِيدَهُ، وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ سَيِّدِ الصَّائِمِينَ وَالْقَائِمِينَ، وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ أَجْمَعِينَ.
اللهم إنّي نويتُ صيامَ شهرِ رمضان إيمانًا واحتسابًا، وطاعةً لك وامتثالًا لأمرك، واقتداءً بسنّة نبيّك سيّدنا محمّدٍ ﷺ، ونويتُ ما نواه النبيُّ ﷺ والسلفُ الصالحُ من آلِ البيتِ الكرامِ والصحابةِ الأعلام، ونويتُ القيامَ بحقّ الصيام على الوجه الذي يرضيك عنّي، والمحافظةَ على القيام، وإحياءَ لياليه بالصلاة والتلاوة والذكر والمناجاة.
اللهم إنّي نويتُ صيامَ الجوارح كلّها عمّا لا يرضيك، فصيامَ لساني عن الكذب والغيبة والنميمة واللغو، وصيامَ سمعي عن استماع الباطل، وصيامَ بصري عن النظر إلى الحرام، وصيامَ سائر أعضائي عمّا لا يرضيك، وصيامَ قلبي عن الرياء والعجب والكبر والحسد وسوء الظن، وصيامَ سرّي عمّا سوى دوامِ شهودِ قربك.
اللهم إنّي نويتُ تلاوةَ القرآن حقّ تلاوته، وتدبّرَ آياته، والعملَ بأحكامه، وجعلَه ربيعَ قلبي ونورَ صدري وجلاءَ حزني وذهابَ همّي، ونويتُ كثرةَ الذكر لك، والصلاةَ والسلامَ على نبيّك، وعمارةَ أوقاتي بطاعتك.
اللهم إنّي نويتُ التوبةَ النصوح، وتزكيةَ نفسي، وتطهيرَ قلبي، وتهذيبَ شهواتي، ومخالفةَ هواي، ومجاهدةَ نفسي فيك حقَّ المجاهدة، وأن لا تجعلَ حظّي من صيامي الجوعَ والعطش، ولا من قيامي السهرَ والتعب، بل القبولَ والقربَ والرضا.
اللهم إنّي نويتُ التبرّؤَ من حولي وقوّتي، ونويتُ الالتجاءَ إلى حولك وقوّتك، ونويتُ الاعتمادَ على تدبيرك دون تدبيري، ونويتُ طلبَ الكفاية منك دون سواك، ونويتُ الافتقارَ إليك في كلّ شيء.
اللهم إنّي نويتُ كثرةَ الصدقات، وتفطيرَ الصائمين، وإطعامَ الطعام، وسقيَ الماء، ومواساةَ الأرامل والفقراء والأيتام، وإدخالَ السرور على قلوب المؤمنين، وصلةَ الأرحام، وبرَّ الوالدين.
اللهم إنّي نويتُ عمارةَ أوقاتِ السَّحَرِ بالاستغفار، ونويتُ عمارةَ أيّامِ رمضان بالطاعات، ونويتُ إحسانَ النيّة في الصيام والقيام وغضِّ البصر وحفظِ اللسان، ونويتُ أن يكون صيامي صيامَ خواصّ عبادك.
اللهم إنّي نويتُ بلوغَ ليلةِ القدر، والقيامَ فيها إيمانًا واحتسابًا، ونويتُ أن أكونَ فيها من المقبولين، ونويتُ كلَّ نيّةٍ صالحةٍ نواها وينويها عبادُك الصالحون لتلك الليلة المباركة.
اللهم إنّي نويتُ عند فطري كلَّ نيّةٍ صالحةٍ نواها وينويها عبادُك الصالحون عند فطرهم.
اللهم إنّي نويتُ كلَّ نيّةٍ صالحةٍ نواها عبادُك الصالحون وأولياؤك المقرّبون في هذا الشهر الشريف، في أوّله وأوسطه وآخره، ونويتُ العتقَ من النار، والفوزَ برضاك وجنّتك، والخروجَ من رمضان مغفورَ الذنب، مستورَ العيب، مبدَّلَ السيئات حسنات.
اللهم فتقبّل نيّاتي كلَّها، وصحّح مقاصدي، وطهّر سريرتي، وبلّغني تمامَ الشهر، وسلّمني فيه، وتسلّمه منّي متقبَّلًا، واجعلني فيه من المقبولين الفائزين، ولا تجعلني فيه من المحرومين.
وَصَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَسْلِيمًا كَثِيرًا، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ.
In the Name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
All praise belongs to God, Lord of all worlds — praise that fulfills His blessings and corresponds to His increase. Blessings and peace be upon our master Muhammad, the master of those who fast and stand in prayer, and upon his family and companions altogether.
O God, I intend the fasting of the month of Ramadan in faith and in seeking Your reward, in obedience to You and compliance with Your command, and in emulation of the practice of Your Prophet Muhammad. I intend what the Prophet intended, and what the righteous forebears intended from his noble family and distinguished companions. I intend to uphold the fast in the manner that pleases You, to maintain the night prayer, and to enliven its nights with prayer, recitation, remembrance, and intimate supplication.
I intend to fast with all my limbs from what displeases You: to fast my tongue from lying, backbiting, slander, and idle speech; my hearing from falsehood; my sight from the unlawful; all my faculties from disobedience; my heart from ostentation, vanity, pride, envy, and harboring negative suspicion; and my innermost self from all but awareness of Your nearness.
I intend the recitation of the Qur’an as it ought to be recited, reflection upon its verses, acting upon its guidance, and that it become the springtime of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my sorrow and anxiety. I intend abundant remembrance of You, prayers upon Your Prophet, and the filling of my time with Your obedience.
I intend sincere repentance, purification of my soul, cleansing of my heart, disciplining my desires, opposing my caprice, and striving against my ego for Your sake — that my fasting not be hunger and thirst alone, nor my night prayer mere fatigue, but acceptance, nearness, and contentment.
I intend to disavow my power and strength and seek refuge in Yours. I intend to rely upon Your governance instead of my own. I intend to seek sufficiency in You from all else and confess my absolute need of You in all things.
I intend abundant charity, feeding those who fast, feeding the hungry, giving drink, supporting widows, the poor, and orphans, bringing joy to believers, maintaining family ties, and honoring my parents.
I intend to fill the pre-dawn hours with the seeking of forgiveness and intend to fill the days of Ramadan with acts of obedience. I intend all the best of intentions in fasting, in the night prayer, in lowering my gaze, and in guarding my tongue. I intend for my fasting the fasting of Your elect servants.
I intend to reach the Night of Power and stand therein in faith and seeking reward. I intend to be among those accepted within it and I intend every good intention that your righteous servants have made and will make for this night.
I intend at the breaking of the fast all good intentions that Your righteous servants have made and will make for that.
I intend every righteous intention made by Your righteous servants and intimate friends in this noble month — in its beginning, middle, and end. I intend freedom from the Fire, attainment of Your pleasure and Paradise, and to leave Ramadan forgiven of sin, my faults concealed, my misdeeds transformed into good deeds.
Accept all my intentions, rectify my aims, purify my inner being, allow me to reach the fullness of the month, keep me safe within it, receive it from me accepted, make me among the accepted and triumphant, and do not make me among the deprived.
And may God send abundant blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad, and upon his family and companions. All praise belongs to God, Lord of all worlds.
